Acupuncture happy hour

Auditions for famous horror show to be Aug. 21 and 22
The Vic will be hosting auditions for “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane” on Aug. 21 and 22 at 6 p.m. at the theatre. All roles are available and open and anyone will be considered. The show has 17 roles, including several ideally for older, ages 50 and up, actresses and actors. The show also needs a few teens, a young girl and various small walk on parts. Eight women/girls and six men/boys and at least 3-5 others. All genders/races and ages welcome and encouraged to audition. Rehearsals will start on Sept. 5. Performances will take place on Oct. 19, 20, 26, 27 and 28 (an additional midnight show or a Halloween performance is possible and will be determined once a cast is set). Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 12
The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills, as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. The Friendly Squares will also be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 31 from 7-8 p.m. and on Sept. 3 from 2-3 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building.
Alumni association sells raffle tickets
The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fundraiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash, second prize contains gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $200 and third prize is a dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and a dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded $6,000 to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and $1,000 in mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 22. Tickets can be purchased until half time or by contacting Austintown Alumni Association president Lynn Larson at 330-518-5727.
Volunteers sought for heritage day
In preparation for its ninth annual Polish Heritage Day on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church on 4310 Kirk Road in Youngstown (at the corner of Kirk and Raccoon Roads), organizers are inviting the public to help make the event happen. Volunteers of every age, skill and ability are welcome. Help is needed for everything from set up and take down to ticket sales, helping with the pierogi-eating contest and assisting in cultural display and children’s areas. Various shifts are available. Every volunteer gets free admission and a t-shirt (while supplies last). Paper crafting corner

Youngstown’s SCORE is presenting “Where’s the Money? What lenders look for in your business plan” at Youngstown SCORE’s upcoming business networking series, Bagels to Business, on Aug. 21 at Kravitz Deli, located at 3135 Belmont in Liberty, from 9-10:30 a.m. Featured speakers are banker Brett Carnahan, Seven Seventeen Credit Union; banker Jeanette Cocher, Farmers National Bank; Mario Nero, Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corporation, and Tom Sangrik, U.S. Small Business Administration. Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament
Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. Learn to use one of today’s most prominent tools in scheduling at this program on Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Learn the basics of using Google Calendar including adding events, linking documents, adding and sharing calendars, printing calendars, sending/accepting/declining invitations and color coding. Chapter Chat book club
If you love books go to the Chapter Chat book club on Aug. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library where they will be reading and discussing a book together every month. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Blood drive
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Austintown library on Aug. 19 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. This blood drive will serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Coupon swap at the library
If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during the Austintown library’s hours during August to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Ten thousand pages of YA
This month, you can combine forces in an attempt to read 10,000 pages of YA books. Tell a librarian at the center desk at the Austintown library that you’d like to add pages to the total. If you participate, you may be eligible for a September pizza party if they meet their goal. Make sure you fill out a contact form. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Build and go craft
Make a craft at the Austintown library during regular hours in June through August to take home. This event is for children of all ages.
Austintown Park to have summer concerts
The 2017 Summer Concerts in the Park series, presented by Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, at Austintown Park will soon begin. Concerts will take place on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. Concerts will include Sound Bite on Aug. 22. Austintown Park is located at 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown.

Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in August at 10 a.m.
GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
