Warren police following leads in shooting death of Youngstown man

Staff report

WARREN

City police say they are following leads but don’t know a lot yet about the cause of Tuesday night’s shooting death of William E. Anderson, 63, of Ohio Avenue in Youngstown.

Anderson was found dead in a car on Harvard Drive Southeast, which is near the Candlelight Apartments off of North Road. He had been shot in the neck.

The Trumbull County Coroner’s office said Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, county coroner, did an initial examination of Anderson, but he won’t do the autopsy until Friday.

Sgt. Joe Kistler of the Warren police detective bureau said it would appear that Anderson’s death will be ruled a homicide.

Police were called to the location at 10:06 p.m. by someone who said he heard shots. When the caller went outside, he saw a man in a car not moving. Police said Anderson was in the driver’s seat.

According to 911 calls from the incident, one witness said he was driving past the car and saw Anderson inside. The witness said he thinks someone else was in the car and took off on foot, leaving open the passenger door on Anderson’s car, a 2015 Ford Taurus.

Kistler said police still don’t know why Anderson was in the Warren area. The department has not had any previous contact with him, and he has no criminal record in the area.

Ambulance personnel pronounced Anderson dead at the scene. Police recovered one shell casing.

Kistler said the Candlelight Apartments are not known as a high-crime or high-drug area.
