Kuzman’s sold

GIRARD

Rand Fusselman has purchased the former site of Kuzman’s bar, 1025 S. State St. The polka lounge went up for sale in February after the death of longtime owner Helen Kuzman, 87, in January.

ATHENA awards

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Twelve women from Lawrence and Mercer counties were recently honored for their professional achievements, their contributions to their communities and their examples of leadership and mentoring of the next generation of women leaders at the fifth annual Lawrence/Mercer County ATHENA Award Celebration at New Castle Country Club.

The highlights were presentations to Alyson Stover of West Middlesex with the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award. Stover is the proprieter of Capable Kids LLC and director of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Occupational Therapy. The ATHENA Leadership Award recipient was Jennifer Bell, client adviser at F.N.B. Wealth Management.

The ATHENA Organizational Award was presented to Atty. Margaret T. Lucas.

Stocks rally as banks, industrial companies rise

NEW YORK

U.S. stocks climbed Thursday as industrial companies, banks, technology and materials firms and energy companies all rallied. A strong day of corporate results left investors feeling better about the economy.

For more than a week investors have been poring through company earnings for signs the economy is growing at a faster pace, and Thursday they felt they found it. Railroad operator CSX gave transportation companies such as railroads and airlines a big boost while Sherwin-Williams raised its annual projections and helped basic materials makers go higher.

Applications for US jobless aid rise

WASHINGTON

More people sought U.S. unemployment benefits last week, yet total applications remained at a historically low level that suggests workers are enjoying solid job security.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 244,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell to 243,000.

The number of Americans seeking benefits dropped 49,000 to 1.98 million, the fewest since April 2000.
