1775: Paul Revere begins his famous ride from Charlestown to Lexington, Mass., warning colonists that British Regular troops were approaching.

1906: A devastating earthquake strikes San Francisco, followed by raging fires; estimates of the final death toll range between 3,000 and 6,000.

1942: During World War II, an air squadron from the USS Hornet led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle raids Tokyo and other Japanese cities. Also, the first World War II edition of The Stars and Stripes is published as a weekly newspaper.

1956: American actress Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier of Monaco in a civil ceremony.

1983: Sixty-three people, including 17 Americans, are killed at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, by a suicide bomber.

2007: The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, upholds the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, saying it does not violate a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.

2012: Dick Clark, the ever-youthful television host and producer who helped bring rock ’n’ roll into the mainstream on “American Bandstand” and rang in the New Year for the masses at Times Square, dies in Santa Monica, Calif., at age 82.

1992: About 100 people march around Wick Park in a candlelight vigil in memory of Youngstown’s 59 homicide victims of 1991 and to reinforce the neighborhood watch movement.

Vandals spray paint obscenities and Satanic graffiti inside First Baptist Church of McDonald.

First Federal Savings and Loan Associations of Warren and Youngstown report quarterly earnings of more than $1 million each, attributable to higher interest rates. The fixed rate for a 30-year mortgage is 8.84 percent; a one-year adjustable rate is 6.11 percent.

1977: Maintenance workers at the Sherwin Williams plant in Hubbard return to work after an “overwhelming” vote by members of UAW Local 4427 to ratify a new three-year contract.

The Greater Youngstown Area has one of the highest accident rates in the country, which is the reason for higher insurance rates, especially for single male drivers between 20 and 24.

More than 400 people attend the 15th annual banquet of the Baseball Oldtimers at the Sokol Center where 12 new inductees into the hall of fame are honored. 1967: The United Veterans Council, representing some 10,000 veterans in 30 Mahoning County organizations, goes on record opposing removal of the Man on the Monument from Central Square.

Mahoning County commissioners plan an appraisal of St. Patrick School on Glenwood Avenue with the possibility of buying it to house county welfare offices that are located in several places.

Approval by voters of the school operating levy on May 2 would make it possible to begin construction of a proposed junior high to alleviate crowded conditions at Woodrow Wilson High School.

1942: Two Youngstown men and one from Masury are promoted to major in the U.S. Army: Robert Weir, Harris E. Rogner and Dr. H.L. Davidson.
