Students, staff, policemen and firefighters tried to make trick shots at Robinwood Lane Elementary School to raise money and awareness for former Boardman teacher, Christine Terlesky, who was diagnosed with ALS.

Everyone at Robinwood was encouraged to wear a basketball jersey or shirt and bring in loose change to donate. The idea came about when staff members heard about the Trick Shot Challenge in the news and decided it would be a fun way to raise awareness.

Sgt. Charles Hillman and Sgt. Glen Riddle from the Boardman Police Department and Kent and Kurt Wright from the Youngstown Fire Department did their best to out-shoot each other with their best trick shots. Kurt was first to up to shoot and his trick shot was sitting on a chair facing away from the hoop and trying to make the shot.

Each person had two chances to make their shot. After the staff members and public safety members had their turn, 16 students’ names were randomly selected from the third and fourth-grade classes. The students also had two chances to make their trick shot.

The Trick Shot Challenge took place on the Friday before the students had to take their state tests. This gave the students and faculty a chance to have fun and relax before having to buckle down the next week for tests.

“I liked having fun and getting us ready for the state test,” said fourth-grader Victoria Strines who did a deep 3 trick shot.

Robinwood challenged Market Street Elementary, West Boulevard and Stadium Drive Elementary to participate in the Trick Shot Challenge to fill the container to the top with money.

“We’re donating the money to Christine Terlesky and her family,” said Jen Flores, physical education teacher.
