Boys track opens season with victory

The Boardman boys track team opened the 2017 season with a 100-42-33 victory over the Howland Tigers and Lakeview Bulldogs in Cortland on March 28.

The Spartans opened the meet with a first place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of seniors Chris Butler and Nathaniel Ams, sophomore Payton Torres and freshman Mitchel Dunham. Junior JaJuan Forte placed second in the 100-meter dash with senior Koby Adu-Poku in third and senior Sheldon Broyles in fourth. The 4x200 meter relay team of sophomore Ceoannie Jones, senior Caeden Rogers, sophomore Josh Rodriguez and Broyles placed first.

In the 1600-meter run, Butler placed first and Dunham was second. The 4x100 relay team of Forte, Broyles, Rogers and senior Jason Clinkscale placed second. Adu-Poku finished first in the 400-meter run with Rodriguez in second and junior Jason Fabian in third. Junior John Fleet placed second in the 300 hurdles with freshman Brian Yauger in fourth. In the 800-meter run, sophomore Trevor Boggess placed third and Dunham was fourth. Meanwhile, in the 200-meter run, Forte was first and Fabian was second.

The next event was the 3200-meter run, which saw senior Dom Eorio place fourth. The 4x400 relay team of Adu-Poku, Rodriguez, Fabian and Broyles placed first.

In the field events, senior George Wallace was first in the shot put, he was followed by junior Steve Amstutz in second and sophomore Nikitas Missos in fourth. Wallace placed first in the discus and junior Zach David was third. Senior Richard Fisher placed first in the high jump and pole vault, junior Noah Massie was second in the long jump and sophomore Billy Cammack was second in the high jump.

“This was a very impressive opening day,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “Our athletes and coaches have been working very hard since as early as November for this season and we are very excited to see what happens this spring.”
