YSU to announce first Friedman faculty member

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel and other university leaders plan a news conference this morning to introduce YSU’s first Friedman faculty member in engineering.

Eric MacDonald, formerly at the University of Texas at El Paso, has been appointed the first Friedman Chair in Engineering at YSU.

The university has hired a global scholar in 3D printing and additive manufacturing for the new position.

The Friedman Chair in Engineering at YSU was established by Morris and Phyllis Friedman.

Friedman, founder of United Steel Service Inc. in Brookfield, and his wife, Phyllis, last year donated $2.5 million to YSU to establish the full professor faculty position.

Improper turn leads to handgun arrest

YOUNGSTOWN

Officers found a loaded 9 mm handgun about 6:45 p.m. Saturday at Parker and Woodside avenues after officers pulled over a man for an improper turn.

Reports said the driver, Glen Gabriel, 22, of Youngstown, has a suspended license and was being written a citation.

As police searched his car before it was towed, they found the handgun underneath the seat.

Gabriel was given an additional charge of improper handling a firearm in a motor vehicle and booked into the Mahoning County jail.

Man gets 18 months for fleeing police

YOUNGSTOWN

Brandon Jackson, 36, of Youngstown, was sentenced Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to 18 months in prison after he pleaded guilty before Judge Shirley J. Christian to a charge of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

The plea came just before Jackson was to go on trial Monday for leading police on a high-speed chase on April 20 on the East Side.

Jackson fled after police tried to pull him over for a traffic violation, but was caught after he crashed the car he was driving while trying to make a turn.
