Husted announces services expansion

COLUMBUS

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted on Wednesday announced the expansion of online services offered through Ohio Business Central, a program he launched in October 2013.

The announcement is part of the secretary’s ongoing goal to make it easier and more cost-effective to start and maintain a business in Ohio.

Last month, six new forms were added to the online system, meaning 90 percent of business filings received by the Secretary of State’s office can now be completed on the secretary of state’s website. The new forms include: Foreign For Profit Corporation Application for License; Foreign Nonprofit Corporation Application for License; Registration of Foreign Corporate Name; Certificate of Foreign Limited Partnership; Registration of Foreign Limited Liability Company; and Statement of Qualification-Foreign Limited Liability Partnership.

Lawsuit filed over new overtime law

COLUMBUS

The National Federation of Independent Business has filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of Labor over its new overtime law.

The federation says the department is stepping far beyond its statutory authority with the law that requires salaried workers making less than $47,476 to be paid overtime.

Joining NFIB in the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Texas, are the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and more than 50 business groups across the country. A separate coalition of 21 states, including Ohio, also filed a lawsuit challenging the rule.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Cleveland, blasted the lawsuit, calling it a waste of taxpayer dollars. He says the overtime rule will make more than 130,000 Ohioans eligible for overtime pay.

US stocks jump

NEW YORK

U.S. stocks climbed Wednesday as investors were relieved that the Federal Reserve once again left interest rates unchanged. That sent dividend-paying stocks higher, while energy companies jumped with the price of oil.

Oil prices jumped as fuel stockpiles shrank and investors hoped that supply gluts are easing, which would allow prices to rise.
