Dismissed early VIENNA

A septic system failure Tuesday that caused sewage to back up into the boy’s and girl’s rest rooms at Currie Elementary School in the Mathews School District resulted in 175 students being dismissed early at about 1 p.m. The students were transported by bus to Baker Elementary School where they could be picked up by parents or bused home. According to 21 WFMJ-TV, Mathews schools Superintendent Lew Lowery said a contractor was hired to clear the lines and classes are expected to resume at normal times today.

Fentanyl patches found

AUSTINTOWN

Officers arrested a Girard man on a charge of drug possession after stopping a vehicle for a cracked windshield. According to the report, after making the traffic stop Monday night at T/A Travel Center, 5400 Seventy Six Drive, officers discovered passenger Charles Britt, 38, of Motor Inn Drive, had three fentanyl patches hidden in his right shoe. Britt also had a warrant for his arrest through the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for larceny.

He has a hearing at 9 a.m. today in Mahoning County Area Court here. Police told the driver to fix the windshield.

Impregnated girl, 14

WARREN

A Portage County man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to impregnating a 14-year-old Trumbull girl.

The girl has since delivered the child. Warren police investigated the allegations. Anthony Golden, 21, of Wayland Road in Diamond, could get up to 18 months in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Andrew Logan in about four weeks, after the county’s Adult Probation Department conducts a pre-sentence investigation. Golden pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Diane Barber, assistant county prosecutor, said DNA evidence proves Golden is the father.

Sex for child support

AUSTINTOWN

Officers arrested a Salem woman accused of soliciting sex at an Austintown hotel Monday evening. According to the report, Melinda Shingler, 34, of Butcher Road, said she was involved in prostitution at Austintown Inn, 5431 Seventy Six Drive, to pay her child support. Officers found a marijuana grinder with marijuana inside, burnt marijuana cigarettes and other unnamed drug paraphernalia. Shingler further advised officers she had met six clients since Sept. 15 in Austintown, all responders to her ad online. Shingler faces charges of soliciting sex and possessing criminal tools. Officers also issued her a summons on charges of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. She has a hearing today in Mahoning County Area Court.

City council will have a special meeting that will adjourn into executive session at 5:45 p.m. today in council chambers to discuss personnel. After that session, council’s finance and legislation committee will meet at 6:15 p.m.; the public utilities committee will meet at 6:30 p.m.; and the police and fire committee will meet at 6:45 p.m.

Free car-seat checks

SHARON, PA.

Free car-seat safety checks will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Sharon Fire Department, 155 W. Connelly Blvd.

The checks are part of Child Passenger Safety Week. On average, three of four car seats are used incorrectly, PennDOT said.
