Teacher assaulted

YOUNGSTOWN

A 16-year-old student at the Mahoning Valley Opportunity Center is being held in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center on a ffifth-degree felony assault charge after sucker-punching a 68-year-old male teacher in the face and throwing him to the classroom floor Wednesday at the school.

The school, at 496 Glenwood Ave., is a fully accredited charter drop-out prevention high school, said Mahoning County Sheriff’s Deputy Maj. Jeff Allen. The assault occurred at about 9 a.m.

Allen said the teen admitted hitting the teacher, saying the teacher disrespected the teen’s mother. Allen said he expected to get the teacher’s statement today. The teacher was not seriously hurt, but his face was red and swollen, the deputy said.

Ban on clown costumes

Clown costumes are banned from the city schools after reports across the country of menacing clowns. “While we have no recent threats or sightings near our schools, we are being proactive in our fall activities,” Chief Executive Officer Krish Mohip said in a news release. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We believe that the elimination of these costumes can help our children enjoy their fall activities without being fearful or experiencing any undue anxiety.”

Crash injures 3

GOSHEN

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post continues investigating a two-vehicle injury crash at state Routes 14 at 165.

A box truck driven by Anthony Beshara, 18, of Canfield was eastbound on Route 165 at Route 14 at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday. A tractor-trailer driven by Kevin Hosea, 31, of Wheaton, Ill., was southwest on 14, approaching 165. The box truck failed to yield at a stop sign and was struck by the oncoming tractor-trailer, according to the highway patrol.

Both vehicles went off the right side of the roadway, striking a guardrail. The box truck rolled onto its right side, coming to rest. The tractor-trailer came to a final rest in a creek off the south side of the roadway.

Both drivers were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The box truck had a juvenile passenger who was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.

The Goshen Police Department, Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Damascus Fire Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control around the crash scene.

Hydroplane crash

YOUNGSTOWN

A steady rain with standing water is being blamed for a rollover crash on Interstate 680 Thursday morning.

At about 8:30 a.m., a pickup truck hydroplaned near the Shirley Road exit, police told 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

The truck hit the median and flipped onto its side.

The 23-year-old driver was cited for failure to control and was taken to the hospital for observation.

Resurfacing project

CANFIELD

Canfield Township trustees reported that a recent resurfacing project was completed under budget.

The township budgeted $190,000 for the project – consisting of 1,500 feet of Gibson Road and all of Steeplechase Run, Muirfield Drive, Bay Hill Drive and Fountain Valley Court – and ultimately used only $144,160 to complete it.

‘In Concert’ event

BOARDMAN

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will host its annual “In Concert” event in the high-school gymnasium, 7777 Glenwood Ave., at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The event is a retrospective of the 2016 marching season and also will feature performances from the Spartan Sweethearts and Silks.

After the concert, attendees are invited to a cupcake-themed reception based on the Food Network show “Cupcake Wars.” Band students were challenged to make cupcakes that capture the spirit of this year’s marching band closing routine: “A Spaghetti Western Adventure.”

Admission to the concert is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for senior citizens 65 and older.

Diabetes education

YOUNGSTOWN

A free, six-week Diabetes Empowerment Education Program for people with diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions will have its first session from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Central YMCA, 17 N. Champion St., downtown.

The series of interactive small-group workshops teaches patients about diabetes, its effects on health and self-management of the condition.

Brewfest in Warren

WARREN

The Mahoning Valley Brewfest to benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at W.D. Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave.

Participants will have the opportunity to taste craft and micro brews. The event also will feature Colin Dussault’s Blues Project, more than 30 breweries and a variety of food trucks. Local breweries include BirdFish Brewing Co. and Numbers Brewing Co.

Tickets are $35 for general admission, $50 for VIP and $10 for designated driver. There will be tickets available at the door.

Road to be closed

FOWLER

King Graves Road, between state Route 193 and Sodom-Hutchings Road, will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday for the setting of transmission poles, the Trumbull County engineer announced.

The recommended detour route is north on state Route 193, east on state Route 305 and south on Sodom-Hutchings.
