Flu-shot clinics in Mahoning County

AUSTINTOWN

The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering flu- shot clinics at several locations.

They are 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Mauthe Park, 156 Smithfield St., Struthers; 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Berlin Township Building, Weidenmeier House, 15801 Akron-Canfield Road; and noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Lake Milton Fire Station, 15980 Milton Ave.

No appointment is necessary. Most private insurances are accepted.

Patients must bring their insurance cards, driver’s license and Medicare and Medicaid cards so the cost of the vaccine can be billed.

The nasal-spray influenza vaccine is not available. Available flu vaccines and their costs are: Quadrivalant (4 flu virus strains) $40; quadrivalant (4 flu virus strains), short needle intra-dermal, $40; and high-dose trivalent (3 flu virus strains) for those 65 and older, $55.

Pregnancy course

Naturopathic Dr. Dannielle MacDuff is offering a three-week course for women who are – or are thinking about becoming – pregnant titled What your OBGYN Doesn’t Tell You About Pregnancy and Childbirth at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 and Nov. 1 at Trumbull Career and Technical Center, 528 Educational Highway.

Vision therapy workshop offered

NORTH LIMA

Dr. Joseph Pederzolli, O.D., is offering a free workshop about vision therapy from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Eye Care & Vision Therapy Center, 11995 South Ave.

In this hands-on workshop, Dr. Pederzolli will discuss digital devices and how they affect learning and vision, if binocular skills are needed to enhance learning, and what is the best treatment for binocular disorders.

Workshop participants will learn how to assess, test for and distinguish visual conditions that keep some children from doing well in school and how and why vision therapy works. For information, call 330-549-9780.

Detox services

YOUNGSTOWN

Turning Point Counseling Services Inc. has begun providing in-patient drug and alcohol detox services at its Belmont Avenue facility.

The sub-acute detox program is a five- to seven-day residential program that provides 24-hour medical monitoring, observation, and intensive group and individual counseling and support, including medically assisted treatment, said Brian Kennedy, executive director of Turning Point.

“Our collective care with Neil Kennedy and Meridian Healthcare is a major step in addressing Ohio’s opioid epidemic. Turning Point adds up to 16 beds for detox to the 200 statewide,” Kennedy said.

Health workshop

Mercy Health-Youngstown is offering a one-hour workshop, Health at Home, from 11 a.m. to noon or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Warren Room at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave. SE.

The workshop includes a reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems and tips on caring for individuals and their family on preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention.
