The Youngstown State University Foundation and members of the Youngstown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will present a book review, panel discussion, and signing of the autobiography of the Honorable Judge Nathaniel R. Jones, “Answering the Call.” The event is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the DeBartolo Stadium Club at YSU.
YSU President Jim Tressel will introduce Judge Jones, who will give a synopsis of his autobiography followed by a discussion hosted by a panel of students, Kappa Alpha Psi brother and community persons.
Jones was awarded the 2016 NAACP Spingarn Medal, the organization’s highest honor, and the International Freedom Conductor Award from the National Underground Freedom Center. On Oct. 5, he received the Simeon Booker Award for Courage at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown, organized by the Ohio Non-violence Committee.
Delta Sigma Theta’s Arts and Letters committee is encouraging student participation in the event with assistance from school personnel. One hundred books were purchased and donated by an area foundation for students at Chaney High School, East, Youngstown Early College, Choffin Career Center and other groups which work with young people. The sorority has encouraged schools to host reading groups and class discussions, followed with attendance of the book discussion and review. The sorority’s goal is to motivate people of all ages to enjoy literature.
It is recommended that participants purchase the book online or at a local bookstore before attending the review so they may participate in the discussion. Books also will be available for purchase at the event. Refreshments will be served, and donations may be made to the Judge Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund at the YSU Foundation.
