Shooting probed
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are trying to figure out how a man who was shot Monday inside an Imperial Avenue home ended up in a Tyrell Avenue parking lot.
Officers were called about 4:45 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Imperial Avenue on a report of a man who was shot, but before officers got there, the victim had left. Police found him in the lot with a gunshot wound to his stomach. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Officers said the man was inside the home when a woman shot him, but they did not say why. A group of people in an apartment across the street said they heard a series of gunshots. They also said the woman’s children ran into their apartment screaming that someone was shooting their mother. Relatives came a short time after police arrived and took the children.
Dinner deliveries set
AUSTINTOWN
Sheriff Jerry Greene, in coordination with the Austintown Senior Center and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s office Senior Services program, will be delivering Thanksgiving dinners to area seniors for the 10th annual Thanksgiving for Seniors at noon Wednesday at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive.
Mahoning County commissioners as well as other volunteers will be meeting at the center to deliver the meals.
The program is open to referred senior citizens who are unable to cook, homebound, and have no other resources to obtain Thanksgiving dinner. Area agencies and organizations have made referrals for those that meet the criteria and offered their assistance in delivering the meals.
Financial contributions and in-kind assistance and food donations have been made by Austintown Senior Center, Boardman Sam’s Club, Comfort Keepers, Highway Tabernacle Church, Austintown Rotary, Area Agency on Aging District 11 and the Austintown and Boardman Giant Eagle locations. Many private citizens also have donated supplies, services and food.
Boardman school receives donation
BOARDMAN
The board of education on Monday accepted a donation from the Rotary Club of Boardman to a Glenwood Middle School club.
The middle school’s HOPE (Helping Our Planet Earth) Club will receive the $735 to purchase a weather balloon. The weather balloon will be used for future experiments and projects for the school’s seventh-grade science classes.
The club, led by advisers Laura Kibby and Scott Lenhart, is an environmental club that teaches children how to be green-friendly.
Thanksgiving Mass

Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, will celebrate Thanksgiving Mass at 10 a.m. today in the Ursuline High School gymnasium with the student body. The tradition of the bishop of Youngstown joining Ursuline High School for this liturgy dates back to 1969.
Mock trial team seeks GoFundMe funds

The Hubbard High School “Legal Eagles” mock trial team has set up a GoFundMe web page to raise $2,000. The team wrote on its page, “Our students were previously funded by the district, but state budgetary cuts have left us to fend for ourselves for everything from obtaining case materials and team registrations to transportation and supplies to prep for our competition.”
The team’s first competition will take place Jan. 20.
Hearing on disability of death-row inmate to continue Jan. 3

A hearing that began last week to determine whether Andre Williams, 49, should be removed from Ohio’s death row on the basis of his intellectual disability will resume at 9 a.m. Jan. 3.
Several witnesses testified last week, including two mental-health professionals.
The hearing will continue for several days the week of Jan. 3.
Williams was convicted in the murder of George Melnick, 65, and assault of his wife, Katherine, 64, in 1988 at their home on Wick Street Southeast.
A co-defendant, Christopher W. Daniel, 47, has served 27 years of his sentence of 37 to 100 years.
Warren committee

The Warren City Council Finance Committee will meet at 5 p.m. today in the council caucus room of the Municipal Justice building, 141 South St. SE.
4 OVI citations issued
CANFIELD
The Mahoning County OVI Task Force last weekend issued four citations for OVI.
A news release from the task force said checkpoints at 483 N. Canfield-Niles Road from 10 p.m. to midnight Friday and 4477 Mahoning Ave. from 1 to 3 a.m. Saturday had 802 vehicles pass through the checkpoints.
Troopers with the Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted the task force at both checkpoints.
Groups seek end to negotiations

Twenty one faith, civil-rights and immigrant-rights groups have asked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to cease contract negotiations with Corrections Corp. of America to house immigrants at its facility on Hubbard Road.
In a news release, the American Civil Liberties Union said the group has concerns about for profit prisons, inhumane treatment of immigrants and alternative options for people seeking asylum.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons declined in 2014 to renew its contract with the facility. The ACLU said it is concerned that problems at the prison have not been fixed, yet the government now wants to house asylum-seekers there.
Officiers use Narcan on woman at eatery

Township police revived a woman at Steak N’ Shake who overdosed at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, according to a report.
Officers arrived at the Applewood Boulevard eatery where emergency officials found Kristina Green, 28, of Jefferson in the women’s restroom barely breathing.
Police found four syringes, a metal spoon, cigarettes and a white power she admitted was heroin. Officials were able to revive her using eight sprays of Narcan, the opiate reversal drug. She is charged with drug abuse and possessing drug-abuse instruments.
