Failures of Obama have nothing to do with color

It is quite amusing, bordering on laughable, that Bertram de Souza considers President Barack Obama as a victim over the last eight years of evil Republicans opposing him “ ... to the extent that the president and his family have been subjected to vile racist comments that undermined ‘progress’ ... .”

Bertram is clueless as to why most good, hard working Americans have been against Obama and it has nothing to do with his race. Some 99.9 percent of Americans who voted against Obama couldn’t care less what color he is. What does cause them to view him negatively is the numerous illegal executive actions to go around Congress and violate the Constitution.

Another fact is that he has made race relations worse in this great country by siding, without any facts, with blacks over the police in cases too numerous to mention and proven wrong in every case.

Whether it was Professor Gates, Mike Brown, Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin or others, President Obama didn’t wait for the courts to decide; he decided in every case (wrongly) that the police or individual doing the shooting were at fault.

Upon entering the White House in 2009 he held a meeting with Republican leaders where he stated that ‘‘... elections have consequences” and “I won!” The next thing he did was go on a world tour apologizing for America.

Our newly elected president will never say anything to diminish America in the world by word or deed. Trump didn’t need “Greek columns” and a huge display at Grant Park to show the magnitude of his win. He will quietly follow the Constitution and allow millions of Americans to, again, be proud of their country.

Obama’s legacy will be a footnote in history as it should. He can now golf without being interrupted by having to comment about some American reporter or citizen being beheaded. He will go down in history as one of America’s worst presidents, and it has absolutely nothing to do with his color.

Move out of the way, Bertram; we have work to do cleaning up Obama’s mess.

With Trump, America is getting great already

As we bask in the afterglow of this historic election, I’d like to make three points of a positive nature.

First, it is gratifying to see, based on the names being floated for upcoming appointments, that Mr. Trump is already initiating some of the radical change that he promised would turn Washington, D.C., on its ear, sweeping out the old and bringing in the new.

Whose pulse does not beat a little faster upon hearing fresh names like Gingrich, Giuliani, Christie, and – our “sleeper” candidate – Dr. Ben Carson? That giant sucking noise has to be the sound of the swamp draining – right?

Second, to those nit-pickers who are claiming that Mr. Trump does not really have a “mandate,” I would recall the immortal words of Humpty-Dumpty: “When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.” Did Barack Obama have some kind of “mandate” in 2008 when he won the popular vote by 9.5 million over John McCain? No! Did he somehow earn that “mandate” by beating his 2012 opponent, Mitt Romney, by more than 5 million popular votes? No! Does Mr. Trump have a “mandate” after crushing what’s-her-name in the popular vote by … uh … Well, like I said, it’s just nit-picking.

Finally, I expect – no, I demand – that Democrats extend to Mr. Trump the exact same spirit of consideration, respect and cooperation that Republicans gave to President Obama over the last eight years. After all, fair is fair.

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling great already.

Men, consider if you were target of Trump’s derision

I do not want to “get over this” presidential election result, and I pray that others don’t and won’t. Not only am I appalled, disgusted, furious, and embarrassed by Donald Trump’s election, I am astonished by some of my male friends’ and colleagues’ lack of understanding of my outrage.

Note that, while I write “I” and “my” because this is my letter, I know that I speak for many of my female friends, colleagues, and students. So I implore any male readers who do not understand to imagine electing a female president, who had said the things below.

All of the “quotations” below are Trump’s own words, altered only slightly to swap the female-male perspective. Note also that my alterations are milder than Trump’s versions, as I have a hard time speaking (or thinking) at his level of vulgarity.

“If he weren’t my son, perhaps I’d be dating him.”

“I mean, we could say politically correct, that look doesn’t matter, but the look obviously matters. Like, you wouldn’t have your job if you weren’t handsome.”

“If you’re looking for a rocket scientist, don’t tune in tonight, but if you’re looking for a really handsome man, you should watch.”

“If he can’t satisfy his wife, what makes him think he can satisfy America?”

“He doesn’t have the look. He doesn’t have the stamina.”

“He was the winner and he gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem ...”

“He is unattractive both inside and out. I fully understand why his former wife left him for a woman – she made a good decision.”

“I think that putting a husband to work is a very dangerous thing.”

“If you’re in business for yourself, I really think it’s a bad idea to put your husband working for you. I think it’s a really bad idea.’

“You know I’m automatically attracted to handsome – I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. I just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the b----. You can do anything.”

What I find more tragic than all of Trump’s depravity is that this letter will have no impact on too many men. Too few will read it, and too few will really try to imagine what it would be like to be dressing in a locker room at 15 years of age, and have an older, female authority walk in unexpectedly and ogle them like it was her right.

I’m aghast and agape.

Revisit Electoral College?

Now that the elec- tion is over, maybe we should revisit the Electoral College. I’m a firm believer that the president should be elected be the popular vote and not by another entity.

Hillary Clinton won the election by popular vote yet lost in the Electoral College. Should we take a closer look at how this works and see if it is a benefit to the electorate?

The Constitution says “We The People;” maybe that is what the Foundering Fathers had in mind.
