Allen brothers get long prison terms for 2014 murder

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

YOUNGSTOWN — Brothers Bralin and Breandre Allen were sentenced today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the April 1, 2014, murder of Maurise Kerns, 24.

Bralin Allen, 29, received a sentence of 15 years in prison, while Breandre Allen, 28, received a sentence of 20 years.

The brothers pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of felonious assault and voluntary manslaughter plus firearm specifications. The pleas came after three days of negotiations. The sentence was agreed upon between defense attorneys and prosecutors.

Police said a woman lured Kerns to a vacant home at Idora and Utilis avenues on the South Side, where he was shot and killed.

Police said Kerns was killed because he was thought to be involved in the shooting of one of the brothers a couple of weeks before his death.

The woman and another man also face charges for Kerns' death. Their cases have yet to be heard.
