Lake Milton Dam slated for repair work

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

COLUMBUS — Ohio will invest more than $2 million in dam repairs at three Ohio state parks, including Lake Milton State Park in Mahoning County.

The state project will help bring the earthen embankment, concrete spillway and lake drain system at Lake Milton Dam into compliance with Ohio dam safety laws and rules.

“Lake Milton is a recreational treasure for Milton Township and the surrounding area, as well as a crucial part of the Mahoning River’s water infrastructure,” state Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59, in a release announcing the funding. “These repairs will ensure that this dam is brought into compliance with state safety laws and that it remains a stable system for years to come.”

Lake Milton Dam was constructed in 1916 and the impounded lake originally served as an industrial water supply for the Mahoning River Valley in addition to providing public recreation opportunities.

Lake Milton still augments the flow of the Mahoning River as part of an ongoing agreement between the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

All work on the project is scheduled for completion by April 2018.
