An East Avondale Avenue man is expected to be arraigned today on a charge of domestic violence after police said they found a woman at his home bruised and in a cast.

William Syrette, 28, was taken to the Mahoning County jail after police arrested him about 12:50 a.m. Tuesday at his home in the 300 block of East Avondale on the South Side.

Reports said officers were called to the home for a fight and before arriving, stopped at a house a few doors down. The mother of a woman who lives with Syrette told officers her daughter had been beaten by Syrette on Friday but she never filed charges because she was afraid.

As police walked to Syrette’s home, officers could hear a man screaming from inside and a woman ran out the door. Reports said Syrette came out on the porch with a baseball bat in his hands and was ordered to drop it.

The victim told police Syrette had beaten her early Friday after he became very drunk, even after she tried to defend herself. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital by her mother but told workers at the hospital she fell down a flight of stairs.

The woman told police she was afraid to say she was beaten because she feared Syrette and also because she was afraid she would be arrested because she struck Syrette while trying to defend herself.

Reports said the woman had a cast on one of her arms and bruises on her face, neck and head.

Police arrested Syrette, who screamed racial slurs at the officers, reports said. He continued screaming when he was booked into the Mahoning County jail, reports said.
