The Mahoning County commissioners voted to advertise for bids for installation of a 500,000-gallon elevated water supply tank and a water supply-line extension linked to it in Canfield Township.
On Thursday, they also voted to advertise for bids for concrete pavement rehabilitation on Meridian Road; the First Street paving project in Lowellville; and the Jefferson Street repaving project in Campbell.
The water tank will be on a 0.9-acre site the county purchased last year for $105,000 on Raccoon Road, just south of U.S. Route 224 near the northbound state Route 11 exit ramp.
The long-awaited tank, which will go into service late next year, will increase water pressure and improve fire safety for a heavily developed area along U.S. Route 224 between Raccoon and Tippecanoe roads.
The water tank and supply-line extension are estimated to cost $2.7 million, said Patrick Ginnetti, county engineer.
Bids will be opened for that project at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3 in the county purchasing office.
“It’s huge because of the safety [needs] of the community in that area because of the [multistory] hotels that have been going up,” Commissioner David Ditzler said of the tank’s significance.
“The water pressure has been very weak and limited there,” Ditzler added.
“It’s going to add some capacity and some steady [water] pressures that the fire department’s going to need,” Ginnetti said.
The Meridian Road project consists of temporary repairs at the Interstate 680 and Meridian Road interchange until a permanent improvement of that part of Meridian can be completed several years from now, Ginnetti said.
The commissioners awarded a $68,752 Austintown residential street-resurfacing project to Butch & McCree Paving Inc. of Hillsville, Pa.
The streets to be repaved with asphalt, totaling 3,385 feet, are: Oakwood Avenue from Idlewood Road to Beverly Avenue; Idlewood from Oakwood to Yorkshire Boulevard; Roanoke Avenue from Mahoning Avenue to 122 Roanoke and 155 Roanoke to Stambaugh Avenue; Edgehill Avenue from Oakwood to Stambaugh; and Main Street from Stambaugh to a culvert.
