A committee of four has narrowed the search for a new controller for the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer’s Office.

The committee started with about 20 candidates to replace Joan Wells, who retired a couple of weeks ago.

A committee consisting of Commissioner Mauro Cantalamessa, assistant sanitary engineer Scott Verner, human-resources director Jim Keating and county projects administrator Jim Misocky has narrowed the field to a small number of individuals who are all certified public accountants, Cantalamessa said.

The committee was formed after Commissioner Frank Fuda raised questions recently about the fairness of county hiring practices, saying it appeared that referrals by county commissioners were having too much influence on hiring decisions.

Randy Smith, the county’s engineer and sanitary engineer, will make the final decision, Cantalamessa said.

A similar committee will meet Monday to narrow the field of candidates to replace Keating, who is retiring.

That committee consists of Sarah Boyarko, vice president for economic development, business retention and expansion at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber; Cantalamessa; Misocky; and Howland Township Administrator Darlene St. George. About 30 candidates have expressed an interest in that position.
