Curfew sweeps starting for the summer

YOUNGSTOWN

The city police department, CIRV program and Mahoning County Juvenile Court are about to begin a series of curfew sweeps for the summer.

The first sweep is expected to kick off about 10 p.m. today and they will continue throughout the summer, said Guy Burney, the head of CIRV, or the Community Initiative To Reduce Violence.

Burney said tonight’s sweep is probably the only one that will be publicized in advance.

He said the reason for that is officials want teens and their parents to know that the city’s curfew rules will be enforced.

“This is one of many,” Burney said.

Burney said no one under age 18 is allowed out between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

There are exceptions for people with a parent or guardian or coming or going to work.

Besides citing the juvenile offenders, Burney said the goal is to also hold parents accountable if their children are out past curfew.

Juvenile-probation officers are expected to accompany police during the sweeps.
