HONORS

Advisory board

Nick Tatarka, a native of Boardman, was awarded a position on the Boston Symphony Orchestra Educators Advisory Board in June.

Tatarka earned his bachelor’s degree in music education and double bass performance from Boston University, where he was taught by Todd Seeber and Edwin Barker of the BSO.

In 2010, he became the middle and high school orchestra director for Duxbury Public Schools, where he teaches more than 300 string students in grades six through 12 and Music Technology I courses for the high-school string program. He previously taught in Medfield, Mass., where he helped the Medfield High School Orchestra win a gold medal in a MICCA Concert Festival.

In 2011, the Duxbury string ensemble was the only featured high-school string group at the Massachusetts Music Educator’s Conference. That same year, the ensemble won a gold medal and received the highest score of any instrumental group, band or orchestra at the Heritage Music Festival in Washington, D.C.

In 2010 and 2011, he acted as bass instructor for the New England Conservatory’s Summer Festival Youth Orchestra. His groups have performed with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, cellist Rufus Cappadocia and the Boston String Quartet.

In March 2013, he was invited to conduct the MMEA Western District Junior Orchestra.

Tatarka is the son of Darlene and Jeff Tatarka of Boardman. His maternal grandmother is Angeline Cearfoss. He lives in Middleboro, Mass., with his wife Nikki Ortiz-Tatarka and daughters Evelyn and Vivian.
