The headlight assemblies are provided by a Michigan supplier

General Motors will send letters to nearly 33,000 customers who purchased certain 2016 Chevrolet Cruzes as part of a recall that may not require owners to take their car to a dealership.

The notice applies to certain 2016 Cruze vehicles manufactured between Nov. 5, 2015, and May 26 of this year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, the headlight assembly on those cars are not marked with a three-digit identifier code used to properly aim the lights.

The improperly marked headlight assemblies is a supplier issue, said both Glenn Johnson, president of United Auto Workers Local 1112, and Robert Morales, president of UAW Local 1714, at the General Motors Lordstown Complex, where the Cruze is assembled.

Local 1112 represents workers in the assembly plant, and Local 1714 represents employees in the fabrication plant.

The safety-recall notice says that without the identification code, the headlights may be improperly aimed during service leading to reduced nighttime visibility and increased risk of a crash.

The head lamps in question were supplied by SL America, based in Michigan, according to carconnection.com.

According to NHTA documents, a problem with the manufacturer’s etching software meant that many of the lamps were not marked with the identifier code which gives people working on the components instructions on how the lights ought to be aimed, reported carconnection.com.

GM will mail owners instructions and adhesive labels, with the correct code, to install on their headlight assemblies. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may also bring their vehicle to a GM dealership for assistance in applying the label, free of charge.
