‘Vampire Diaries’ to end after 8 seasons

SAN DIEGO

The eighth season of “The Vampire Diaries” will be the supernatural series’ final entry.

The cast and crew of the CW show announced Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con International that the forthcoming season will be its last.

“The Vampire Diaries” executive producer Julie Plec called the ending “bittersweet and emotional.”

Plec was joined at the pop-culture convention by executive producer Kevin Williamson and cast members Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Matt Davis and Michael Malarkey.

The adaptation of the book series debuted in 2009 and centered on the spooky happenings in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Va.

The eighth and final season will premiere Oct. 21.

Rihanna to play Marion Crane in ‘Bates Motel’

SAN DIEGO

Rihanna is checking into the final season of “Bates Motel” as Marion Crane.

The cast and crew of the A&E drama announced at San Diego Comic-Con International that the singer-actress will join them to portray the role originated by Janet Leigh in the original film version of “Psycho.”

“Bates Motel” executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse were with cast members Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Max Thieriot and Nestor Carbonell on Friday to discuss the show’s upcoming final season.

Cuse says he and Ehrin heard Rihanna was a fan and calls her casting the “perfect collision of creativity and fate.” The character famously meets her bloody demise in the shower of Room 1.

“Bates Motel” debuted in 2013 and features Highmore and Farmiga as Norma and Norman Bates.
