UPDATE | Local NAACP seeks to intervene in attorney jailed for wearing Black Lives Matter button

Friday, July 22, 2016

YOUNGSTOWN — Local representatives of the NAACP seek to intervene on behalf of a black lawyer sentenced to five days in jail today for contempt of court after refusing to remove a Black Lives Matter button she was wearing in the courtroom.

An order has been issued staying a five-day jail sentence and a contempt of court citation.

Atty. Andrea Burton was handcuffed by a bailiff after she refused the order to remove the button by Judge Robert Milich as she was representing a client in a pretrial hearing.

The 7th District Court of Appeals will now hear the contempt charge against Burton at a later date.

Because of the stay she will be released from custody.
