YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County commissioners Tuesday awarded the $284,682 First Street bridge improvement project in Lowellville to Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Inc. of Youngstown.

Federal funds are covering 80 percent of the project cost at the bridge, which spans the Mahoning River. The other 20 percent is coming from gasoline tax and license-plate fee revenue the county engineer’s office receives.

The work includes sidewalk reconstruction on both sides of the bridge, where road salt has caused sidewalk deterioration, and the addition of lamppost lighting to the bridge, said Randy Partika, county bridge engineer.

The bridge project will complement downtown sidewalk and lighting improvements planned by the village of Lowellville for later this year, Partika added.

Anna Paczelt, county law librarian, told the commissioners she will retire Jan. 29 after 101/2 years with the county. She introduced her successor, Susan McGrew, who has been Geauga County law librarian the past 18 years.

The law library is on the fourth floor of the county courthouse, 120 Market St., downtown.

The commissioners will return to their 10 a.m. Thursday regular meeting schedule with their Jan. 28 meeting in the courthouse basement.
