Trash collection

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s residential trash collection will be on its normal schedule next week, according to Charles T. Shasho, deputy director of public works. It will not be a day behind due to the New Year’s Day holiday. Residents should place their trash at the curb at the regular time and day, he said.

Laceration

A Fourth Street Southwest man, 30, suffered at least one severe laceration during an argument with his uncle. The victim was hit in the back, chest and hand with a meat cleaver.

The victim’s father said his brother and son argued at the victim’s house at 2:36 a.m. Tuesday, then the suspect left and returned with the cleaver. The victim said he tried to defend himself with a metal chair. He went to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment. The suspect was gone when police arrived, and no charges have been filed.

Mohip adds to team

YOUNGSTOWN

After 12 years directing an organization that provides computer services to Mahoning and Columbiana County schools, John LaPlante is joining CEO Krish Mohip’s leadership team at the Youngstown City School District.

LaPlante, who was the executive director of ACCESS, or the Area Cooperative Computerized Educational Service System, joins the YCSD as its chief information officer. He will be in charge of the district’s information-technology department and joins the city schools effective Jan. 1.

Free classes

For adults interested in studying for a GED or brushing-up before entering college or a career program, the Youngstown City Schools Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program, ABLE, has free classes beginning in January. Registration will take place at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St. Registration dates and times are as follows: 9 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. Jan. 4 or Jan. 11. Police found suspected heroin on a teenager they arrested for purportedly trying to start a fight at the Southern Park Mall on Monday.

Kevin Ferguson, 16, of Youngstown, and two other males were arguing with a group of people in the food court at the mall at 7401 Market St. As police attempted to break up the argument, Ferguson ignored their commands and continued to yell threatening remarks at the crowd, a report said. Ferguson was arrested, and police said they found a folded piece of paper in his front pocket containing what they believed to be heroin.

A man was arrested after striking his daughter with a liquor bottle on Monday, according to a police report. Kevin Moore, 51, of Youngstown, told officers his 28-year-old daughter was being disrespectful. The two were arguing over food. Moore wis charged with domestic violence and felonious assault.
