Mentoring update

The Louie Free Show on Vindy.com today will host Maraline Kubik from Sister Jerome’s Mission on Christmas need and for a college mentoring program update. Also scheduled are former Mill Creek Park commissioner Atty. Lou Schiavoni and best-selling author, Terry Walters, who is at the forefront of the clean-eating lifestyle movement.

Hearing today

AUSTINTOWN

A teen couple will have a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. today in Mahoning County Area Court after their arrest Sunday evening while in a stolen vehicle.

Campbell resident Leeana Bermudez-Shaulis, 18, and Youngstown resident Alex New, 19, were arraigned Monday afternoon, each charged with receiving stolen property. Police caught them after a traffic stop and questioned them, according to a police report. Bermudez-Shaulis said New stole the car Dec. 9 and planned to leave with her for Kansas the same day.

New said a man named Jose stole the car. He said he entered the car because Jose had a gun and he was scared he would kill him. While buying marijuana, New left with the car to pick up Bermudez-Shaulis.

Police searched the car, finding several PlayStation game systems, jewelry, suspected hashish and marijuana, a pipe and a vape pen. New also is charged with drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Choir festival set

BELOIT

The West Branch Young & Alive Show Choir is hosting a show choir Festival of area show choirs at 7 p.m. today in the West Branch High School Auditorium. The festival will include show choirs from area schools as they perform a selection of holiday favorites.
