batavia, n.y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Batavia Muckdogs split a double header.

Ohio University to make stadium repairs

athens, ohio

After a hefty piece of stone molding fell from the brick exterior of Ohio University’s football stadium onto a sidewalk, other similar moldings have been removed as a precaution and work is underway to stabilize the wall before the team’s home opener in early September.

No one was hurt when the 8-inch-thick piece — measuring about 2 1⁄2 feet by 4 feet — evidently crashed down at the southwest corner of Peden Stadium from a part of the stands that was built in 1929, the school said in a statement. A door and a cabinet of audio and video equipment were damaged.

The school said the support system underneath the stone molding apparently failed, and areas around some of the stands were blocked off as a safety precaution after the fallen stone was discovered the morning of July 27. University officials think the piece fell that morning or the previous night and aren’t aware of anyone having been around when it happened, spokesman Dan Pittman said in an email.

No charges in UCLA sexual assault matter

los angeles

No criminal charges will be filed against UCLA punter Adam Searl over allegations that he sexually assaulted two women, prosecutors said.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office rejected the case on Aug. 11 for lack of evidence, according to a document provided by the prosecutor’s office Wednesday.

“Adam has maintained his innocence from the start and could not be happier to have his name finally cleared,” said Mark Hathaway, one of his lawyers.

The decision came nearly a year after Searl’s arrest.

“It’s sad,” Hathaway said. “The kid’s name is in Sports Illustrated, they walk him off-campus, he’s arrested publicly.”

Searl was allowed to continue classes at UCLA and will graduate next year, the attorney said.

UCLA reinstated Searl for spring practice after it became clear that he would not be charged earlier in the year.

Diaz, McGregor set

for UFC rematch

las vegas

From the late entrance to the expletive-laden comments to the bottle-throwing finale, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz left no doubt that the drama will definitely be there for their highly anticipated rematch at UFC 202.

McGregor showed up about 30 minutes late Wednesday to his news conference with Diaz to promote Saturday night’s main event at T-Mobile Arena. So Diaz started without him.

“Nah I don’t care, it’s rude,” Diaz said when asked whether he was bothered by the featherweight champion’s tardiness.

The fight itself is late in coming.

Diaz beat McGregor by submission in the second round of a welterweight bout March 5 at UFC 196, ending McGregor’s 15-fight winning streak.
