Barnes adds transfer from Miami (OH)

YOUNGSTOWN

Tamira Ford, a graduate transfer from Miami University, has signed to join YSU for the 2016-17 season.

Ford redshirted at Miami during the 2012-13 season and will be eligible for this upcoming season. Ford will not have to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules for graduate students.

The Cleveland native played in 28 games for the Redhawks the past season averaging 2.1 points per game, two rebounds and shot 65.6 percent from the field.

Ford joins a crowded class of newcomers including Morgan Brunner, Mary Dunn, Mailee Jones, Izzy Meese, Natalie Myers and Jennifer Oduho.

Canisius rallies late to beat YSU in extras

Trailing 2-0 heading into the eighth inning, Canisius scored once in the eighth, once in the ninth to tie and followed up with two runs in the tenth inning to steal a win from the Penguins (9-27).

YSU managed just three hits on the day but led thanks to a first-inning run by Lorenzo Arcuri after a leadoff single. Arcuri went to second of a groundout, went to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a delayed double steal.

The Penguins added on in the fifth when Nico Padovan came home on Alex Larivee’s sacrifice fly. Padovan reached on a walk, was bunted over to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Starting pitcher Collin Floyd was struck with a no decision after the freshman tossed seven shutout innings allowing four hits and striking out nine.

In extra innings, Ryan Stekl and Liam Wilson hit back-to-back singles for the Golden Griffins (24-18). YSU looked to get out of trouble on a double-play ball later in the inning on a chopper hit to the mound but closer Kevin Yarabinec threw the ball into centerfield, allowing Stekl to score the decisive run.

YSU plays Canisius again today at 2 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

YSU advances in conference tourney

The YSU women advanced in Horizon League Championship play by defeating Oakland 4-1. The Penguins move on to play UIC this morning in the semifinals.

Oakland (11-10) won the No. 1 matchup as Tamara Blum defeated Dominika Lackova 6-2, 6-4. But that’s all the Golden Grizzlies would get as YSU (10-12) won the remainder of the matches.

Sofia Macias won the No. 4 matchup 6-4, 6-1 over Daria Artamonova and No. 5 Nehel Sahni beat Sofia Borcuti 7-5, 6-1. No. 6 Ana Stroe won 6-4, 6-1 over Juliana Guervara.

In doubles, YSU won the No. 2 matchup 6-2, lost at the No. 1 6-3 and won the deciding match at No. 3 6-4.

No. 2 Annina Brendel was at match point when the Penguins clinched the victory and No. 3 Noelly Nsimba was winning 7-6, 2-1 as well.

The win gives YSU six straight Horizon League tournament match wins.

Penguins fall in tournament play

Cleveland State knocked out YSU of the Horizon League Championships 4-0.

YSU (7-14) was able to push CSU to a third set in four of the five singles matches, but failed to win any.

Joe VanMeter beat Hugo Morth 6-2, 3-6, 4-2 at No. 1 and Mirko Radosevic beat Yossi Dahan 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2.

In doubles play, Morth and Agustin Reyes lost to VanMeter and Andre Mick 6-0 at the No. 1. At No. 2, Colton Buffington and Kevin Goth defeated Bassem El Mekawi and Dahan 7-6.
