Austintown Fitch High School hosted its first Business-STEM Fair on March 29.

Marie Dockery and Ken Kilpatrick, both guidance counselors at Fitch, organized a Business-STEM Fair for the students of Fitch High School to attend. There were two presentations, one during first and second period for freshmen and sophomores, and one during third and fourth period for juniors and seniors.

“This is our first business-STEM fair and I wanted to include business because business is a main career that enables every other career because all careers are rooted in business,” said Dockery.

The fair was put together for students who are interested in the field of business or STEM. Dockery estimated about 350 students attended the presentations.

“We decided to focus on these careers and invite professionals into this school to speak to our students about how our students can obtain these careers. How they can go about being educated and what these careers entail,” said Dockery.

Staff members at Fitch invited their colleagues in different professions to participate in the event. There was a committee of people who reached out to family and friends to be involved.

There were 20 representatives from different companies, including Huntington National Bank, Brilex Industry, Turning Technology and many more, who came to speak to the students and give them advice on pursuing a career in the business or STEM fields. Each of the representatives gave a speech to the students, followed by a question and answer session.

“I’m very grateful to all of our speakers that took time out of their busy schedules and jobs to come,” said Dockery.

Happy with the turnout of the event, Fitch is hoping to host a Business-STEM Fair event every two years like its Trade Fair.
