The Poland library hosted a March Marble Madness event on March 29.

Annette Ahrens, a Poland librarian, used different materials to create three activities involving marbles. There was a station to make a maze, one to create a spinning top and another to building a ramp for a marble to roll down into a cup.

The maze was made out of a piece of cardboard with straws taped on. The goal was to create a maze for a marble to go through.

The spinning top was made from a CD, a marble, a pop bottle cap and hot glue. The guests could color the CD and decorate it however they wanted. The cap and marble would then be glued on the CD, allowing it to be spun.

The marble ramp was the most popular activity. Two of the girls attending the event spent the majority of their time working hard and creating a ramp made out of cardboard rolls, duct tape and pool noodles. The idea was to build a ramp long and stable enough for a marble to roll down and into a cup that was placed across the room.

“I wanted to do this because the kids were on spring break, they’ll be looking for things to do,” said Ahrens.

The library provides a place for children to come have fun, while also putting different skills to use. Children learn how to apply the things they learn in school to outside activities without it feeling like they are working.
