Police probe discovery of human bones behind hotel

WARREN — The Warren Police Department is investigating the discovery of human bones in woods behind the Econo Lodge on Youngstown Road Tuesday evening.

The department forensic officer processed and secured the bones and will be turning them over to the county coroner's office.

The department is also compiling a list of missing persons to help identify the person, said Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel.

It's difficult to tell how long the bones have been there, and it is not known whether the death was natural or not, but it is being treated as a possible homicide, Merkel said.

A motel guest discovered the remains about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and reported them to police.

The remains were about 100 yards from the motel's parking lot, police said. Clothing and tennis shoes were found with the remains.
