Moffatt named HL Player of the Week

Indianapolis, Ind.

Youngstown State junior Brittney Moffatt was named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week for April 25, the league announced on Monday. This is the first weekly award of Moffatt’s career.

For the week, Moffatt batted .727 (8-for-11) with a double, home run, four runs scored and eight runs batted in. She also finished with a 1.091 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .769.

Moffatt is batting .308 on the year and .380 against Horizon League opponents. Over the last 12 games, she is batting .488 (20-for-41) with three home runs, six doubles and 13 RBIs.

The Penguins visit Kent State for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Ex-Ursuline runner finishes half-marathon

ITHACA, NY

Tom Joyce, a 1969 Ursuline High School graduate, completed the Skunk Cabbage Classic Sunday, a half-marathon that is run through the Cornell University campus. With a time of 2:17:17, Joyce finished sixth in the 60-plus age group. Joyce finished 509th overall in the event that drew over 1,000 entries. It is the fourth time he has run the 13-mile race since turning 60.

Weigh-ins announced for boxing tourney

Late registration and weigh-ins have been set for the 29th Annual K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tourney. Signups will be held on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods at 5809 Youngstown-Warren Rd. near the Eastwood Mall. Registration will also be held this Saturday afternoon between 3pm-6pm at The Old School Marketplace at 11836 South Ave. in North Lima.

YSU football alumni golf outing announced

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State Football Alumni Group’s annual golf outing will be on May 13 at the Youngstown Country Club.

Prices for the four-person scramble event are $125 per person for members of the organization and that includes lunch, golf, a YSU mini helmet signed by head coach Bo Pelini and dinner. The cost for non-members is $150. Tee/green signs are also on sale for $50. Annual membership for the group is available for $75 for the 2016-17 academic year.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. while lunch will start at 11 a.m. The outing is set to begin at noon with dinner at 6 p.m.

Those golfing will get a chance to meet YSU President Jim Tressel and Pelini.

Team USA announces pre-Olympic schedule

The U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team will face Argentina and three other opponents during a five-game, five-city exhibition tour.

The Americans will also play two games against China before facing Venezuela and Nigeria.

USA Basketball announced the pre-Olympic plans Monday for the two-time defending gold medalists, who will face the champions from last summer’s Asian, American and African qualifying tournaments.

The U.S. will hold training camp on the campus of UNLV before hosting Argentina on July 22 at a Las Vegas site to be determined.

The Americans will then move to California for games against the Chinese on July 24 at Staples Center in Los Angeles and July 26 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

That will be followed by a game on July 29 at United Center in Chicago against Venezuela, before the tour wraps up in Houston on Aug. 1 against African champion Nigeria.
