Judge rejects Yavorcik plea to postpone sentencing

CLEVELAND — The judge in the Martin Yavorcik case today rejected his request to postpone Friday’s sentencing so he could obtain an alcohol-abuse assessment.

In a brief email, Judge Janet R. Burnside of Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court wrote the sentencing “remains as scheduled” on Friday.

Yavorcik, found guilty of eight felonies in the Oakhill Renaissance Place corruption scandal, requested the delay in a Monday filing.

He was found guilty of the eight felonies March 25.

Yavorcik, a failed 2008 independent candidate for Mahoning County prosecutor, could face up to 29 years in prison.
