AKRON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL “HUGS AND KISSES, HOPES AND WISHES”
Caramel Oatmeal Chewies

13/4cups Quaker oats
11/2cups all purpose flour
3/4cup packed brown sugar
1/2teaspoon baking soda
1pinch of salt
11/2sticks margarine, melted (3/4 cup)
1cup chopped peanuts
1cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (6 ounces)
12.5ounces caramel ice cream topping (one jar)
1/4cup all purpose flour
Grease a 13-by-9-inch pan. Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Stir in melted margarine, mix well. Reserve 1 cup, press remaining mixture into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees or until brown. Let cool for 10 minutes. Top with nuts and chocolate pieces. Mix caramel topping and flour until smooth. Pour over chocolate and peanuts to within 1/4 inch of edge. Sprinkle with reserved oat mixture. Bake an additional 18 to 22 minutes, but be careful not to overcook.
Salted Nut Bars

3cups all purpose flour
11/2cups packed brown sugar
1teaspoon salt
1cup butter or margarine, softened (2 sticks)
1/2cup corn syrup
2tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
1tablespoon water
6ounces butterscotch chips (1 cup)
2cups mixed nuts, cocktail nuts or pecans
Combine first four ingredients, blend well. Press into ungreased 15 by 10 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Sprinkle nuts over crust, Combine syrup, butter, water and chips. Pour over nuts. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Cool and cut into bars. Yields 3 to 4 dozen.
