Brazil revokes Claudia Hoerig citizenship and seeks her arrest

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan had a news conference today to confirm reports that the Brazilian Supreme Court has revoked citizenship for Claudia Hoerig, a former Trumbull County woman accused of killing her husband Karl Hoerig in their Newton Falls home in 2007.

Ryan, D-13th of Howland, said the ruling makes it possible for Hoerig to be extradited to the United States so she can stand trial in Trumbull County. Ryan, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins and others have made repeated attempts over the years to get Hoerig returned to the United States.

Ryan said he's been on the phones all day trying to get as much information as possible and express his desire for Brazilian law enforcement to get Hoerig into custody because of the potential for her to flee.

"We don't want her slipping through the cracks. We want her detained as soon as possible," Ryan said, adding that the Brazilian attorney general "is asking for an arrest warrant for her right now."
