Firefighter injured battling East Side blaze

YOUNGSTOWN — Veteran city Firefighter Lt. Marilyn Nadal was released from the burn unit at Akron Children’s Hospital after treatment for steam burns to her left hand suffered while fighting a house fire this morning at 1328 East High Ave.

The fire was reported at 9:24 a.m. Nadal was injured by steam caused while putting water on the fire on the second floor of the structure, said Battalion Chief Barry Finley.

Finley said Nadal, who has been with the department for about 15 years, is back home and will likely return to duty in a couple of weeks. No other injuries were reported.

Finley said the home was occupied, but no one was home at the time of the fire. The cause is under investigation, and the amount of damage was undetermined as of press time Saturday night.
