Children get a “pizza” the action in Sprout Club

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its monthly Sprout Club meeting on March 17, and this month was all about pizza.
Lynn Zocolo, a horticulture educator at Mill Creek MetroParks, led the class and taught the children that each of the ingredients in pizza come from some type of plant.
“We are going to play a couple games, there’s a story to read and the sensory activity is playing with pizza dough,” said Zocolo.
Sprout Club started out with the children working on a coloring sheet until everyone arrived and was ready to start. Once all of the children were settled down, Zocolo started the class. She asked the children if they ate any plants for lunch, then she brought out a flower that came apart so the children could identify the different parts.
After identifying the plant parts, the children played a game that involved making their own pizza. There was a large die and each number represented a different pizza topping. Children would take turns rolling the die and whatever the number was that it landed on, the children would draw that topping on their paper plate.
When the game was over, the children would then get their own piece of dough to play with. There were rolling pins, flour and cookie cutters for the children to use to create whatever they wanted.
Snacks were passed out at the end of class for the children to enjoy before they went home.
The next Sprout Club meeting will be April 21.
