Spring Flower Palette

What: Join Ellen Speicher for a tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens in search of early-blooming flowers. These beautiful blossoms not only bring delightful color back to the garden, but are also important food sources for pollinators.

PLANT THE SEED TO READ BOOK FESTIVAL

When: Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What: “Grow Through Reading” during the 10th annual Children’s Book Festival. Altrusa Club of Youngstown, Mill Creek MetroParks, Western Reserve Public Media, and Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County bring authors, illustrators, book characters, storytellers and hands-on activities for children. Meet Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat, then join the fun to promote literacy in the Mahoning Valley.

COMPOSTING AT HOME

When: Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.

What: Learn about composting techniques, tips and tricks, and leave with an upcycled kitchen compost pail, garden compost bin and some valuable information to help you get started.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Cost: $25 materials fee

WILDFLOWER WALK

When: Next Thursday, 1 to 2 p.m.

What: Join the Sprout Club to learn about the amazing world of plants with topics that include: pizza plants, moss pets and herbs. Each class includes an activity and snack. Attend all three classes and receive a plant-related prize.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Cost: $15 for the series; $7 per class.

Details: For age 3 to 5 with an adult.

Pruning Your Landscape

When: Monday, 9:30 a.m. to noon

What: Join Eric Barrett to get hands-on experience pruning. Learn to make right cuts at right time for a beautiful landscape. (Pruners not included.)

Fruit Tree Pruning Clinic

When: April 23, 1 to 4 p.m.

What: White House Fruit Farm in Canfield will host the OSU Extension for a demonstration of pruning new fruit trees. Participants will walk through the orchard to see the larger trees first-hand. Learn to prune brambles, then learn about blueberries in the field.

Cost: $20; includes a pair of pruners.
