Canadiens down Pens in Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC

P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov had two assists apiece, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Monday night in a preseason game at Videotron Centre in Quebec City.

Alex Semin, Lars Eller, Brian Flynn and Dale Weise scored for Montreal. Carey Price, who won the Hart Trophy last season for NHL MVP, and the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender, made 22 saves.

Beau Bennett scored for Pittsburgh, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 shots.

Quebec City and Las Vegas are bidding for NHL expansion franchises.

Tomsula insists Kaepernick is starter

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

Coach Jim Tomsula on Monday reiterated that Colin Kaepernick will remain the 49ers’ starting quarterback and did his best to deflect some of the glare from the embattled fifth-year pro following Sunday’s 47-7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

As an example, Tomsula pointed to a third-quarter play in which running back Carlos Hyde — taking a handoff from Kaepernick, who was in the shotgun formation — was tackled in San Francisco’s end zone for a safety. Tomsula said Kaepernick should have been under center, which would have increased the chances of Hyde getting beyond the goal line.

“I let us go in the Q-pistol on the 2-yard line,” he said. “That was my fault. I knew that play went in. Wish I had it back.”

Still, Kaepernick’s career-worst outing Sunday raised a question that has hounded him since he became a full-time starter: Can someone best known for gaining yards with his legs become an efficient passer in the NFL?

Last week, Kaepernick said he was in a better “comfort zone” this season, presumably because the 49ers are allowing him to run more zone-read plays and operate more from the so-called “pistol” formation he perfected at Nevada.

Tomsula said the offense is built to suit his players’ strengths. Kaepernick’s strength is his ability to beat defenses on the ground.

MTV star killed in skydiving accident

SAN FRANCISCO

An extreme sports star skydiving for the opening ceremony of a golf event in Northern California died when he struck a tree Monday, authorities said.

Placer County sheriff’s Capt. Dennis Walsh said Erik Roner, of Tahoe City, died during a skydiving accident at a golf course in Squaw Valley, about 5 miles from Lake Tahoe’s northwest shore.

Witnesses told deputies Roner, 39, was part of a group conducting a skydiving performance before a golf tournament when he hit a tree while trying to land and became entangled high above ground, Walsh said.

Authorities were not able to remove him from the tree, and Roner was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other skydivers landed safely on the golf course in Squaw Valley, home of the ski resort that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Jets lineman Colon sidelined for one game

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.

New York Jets right guard Willie Colon will be sidelined at least one game with a sprained knee.

Coach Todd Bowles said Colon, injured during the Jets’ 24-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, sprained the medial collateral ligament in one of his knees. An MRI on Monday confirmed the injury, which will keep him out of the team’s game against the Miami Dolphins in London. MCL sprains can take several weeks to heal.
