The critically acclaimed film “Sicario,” a brutal depiction of the Mexican drug wars

Monday, September 28, 2015

The critically acclaimed film “Sicario,” a brutal depiction of the Mexican drug wars directed by Denis Velleneuve, will open in theaters across the country Friday. Here are five facts about the film, according to imdb.com:

v New mom: Lead actress Emily Blunt started filming four months after she delivered her first baby girl, Hazel.

v What’s in a word?: The word “Sicario” means “Hitman” in Spanish. The word derives from the Latin word “Sicarius,” meaning “dagger men.” The term was used by Romans in the Province of Judea to describe Jewish Zealots who killed Roman citizens using a “sicae” or small dagger hidden in their cloaks.

v Don’t drink the water: While filming in Mexico, Blunt found herself struck by a nasty case of Montezuma’s revenge. “I got very sick in Mexico,” she said. “Those driving scenes of me looking sweaty and pasty? Those are for real. No makeup needed.”

v Collaboration: This is Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second collaboration. They also will be working together on the new “Blade Runner” movie.

v Superheroes: Jon Bernthal, Josh Brolin, Maximiliano Hernandez and Benicio Del Toro are all involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bernthal plays Frank Castle/Punisher (“Daredevil”), Brolin plays Thanos (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Hernandez plays Agent Sitwell (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Agents of SHIELD”) and Del Toro plays The Collector (“Thor: The Dark World,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”).

“San Francisco 2.0” (9 p.m., HBO): In her insightful new documentary “San Francisco 2.0,” Alexandra Pelosi returns to her hometown to examine how the “digital gold rush” is changing a city traditionally known for its countercultural ways. What she finds isn’t very pretty.

“Booze Traveler” (10 p.m., Travel): Season 2 begins.

“I’ll have what phil’s having” (10 p.m., PBS): A search for the best ramen and sushi in Tokyo.

“The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” (11 p.m., Comedy Central): Late-night television’s dramatic makeover continues as Noah, a relatively unknown comedian from South Africa, slips into the fake-news anchor chair. He takes over for Jon Stewart, a beloved icon who had the job for 16 years – not that there’s a lot of pressure on him or anything.
