Tribute to Black Excellence event set Sept. 25

Youngstown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. plans the 13th annual Tribute to Black Excellence on Sept. 25 at Mahoning Country Club, 710 E. Liberty St.

The tribute is designed to honor individuals and/or organizations that have attained significant milestones or made noteworthy contributions in the Mahoning Valley and neighboring communities.

The 2015 honorees selected by the public service sorority are Ernie Brown, regional editor at The Vindicator; Guy Burney, coordinator of C.I.R.V. (Community Initiative to Reduce Violence); June Ewing, for service in community outreach and nutrition education; Annie Gillam, Youngstown councilwoman, D-1st; Rosalyn Hill, owner of 5 Grands Clothing in Warren; and Pastor Christopher McKee of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Proceeds will benefit the Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Fund along with voter education and registration, health and financial training and mentoring young people. Since the fund’s inception, the chapter’s scholarship fund has awarded more than $300,000 to deserving students in the Mahoning Valley.

Delta Sigma Theta members continue to dedicate themselves to the sorority’s Five Point Programmatic Trust, developed by the founders, that involves economic and educational development, international awareness, physical and mental health and political awareness. Delta members have been committed to public service all over the world for 102 years.

Officers for the coming year are Susan Moorer, president; Chantelle Hallman, first vice president; Crystal Davis, second vice president; Renee Carnathan, recording secretary; Stephanie Jones, corresponding secretary; Dawn Powell, treasurer; Cynthia Wilson, assistant treasurer; and Teresa Rice, financial secretary.

Committee chairwomen for the tribute are Stephanie Jones and Michele Dotson. Committee members are Nancy Murray, Charlotte Grant, Renee Carnathan, Gail Waters, Crystal Davis, Susan Moorer, Cynthia Moore, Octavia Payne and Nikki Davis.

A social hour will start at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30. Donation is $45 with $20 tax deductible. Semi-formal dress is requested. A cash bar and auction will be featured. Music will be provided by Joselyn Parker and the SPEAK Project.
