Third annual Slovak picnic set for Sept. 12

The Youngstown-Warren chapter of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society will host its third annual picnic and bonfire (vatra) Sept. 12 on the grounds of Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Church, 7754 South Ave., rain or shine. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.

The kitchen will be open from noon to 8 p.m. and will offer homemade Slavic food including slanina (smoked bacon) for roasting in the fire and eating with diced tomatoes and peppers on rye bread; holubki (stuffed cabbage), pirogi, haluski with dumplings, kielbasi, vinegar cucumber and sweet onion salad with dill and krupi (smoked ham and barley soup) and more.

The event will feature genealogy material including old country village maps and ethnic sales tables that reflect the Rusyn and Slovak heritage. The bonfire will continue into the evening with music, singing and dancing. Slavic folk musicians Dean Poloka and Tom Katrenich and Company will perform.

A Divine Liturgy will take place at 6 p.m. at the church.
