Torah Studies for Christians

Torah Studies for Christians

VILLA MARIA, PA.

“Torah Studies for Christians,” with Rabbi Saul Oresky and the Rev. George Balasko, will be presented from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at Villa Maria Educational and Spiritual Center.

Co-Sponsored by Jewish/Christian Studies Youngstown and the B’nai B’rith Guardian of the Menorah, this free Bible education series provides an opportunity for Christians to reflect on the Scriptures under the guidance of a rabbi. It will explore the meaning of Yom Kippur before and after the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. It will investigate if the passion narrative in the Gospel according to Matthew is the Yom Kippur celebration.

Free-will offerings will be accepted. Go to vmesc.org for additional program information and registration.

Retirement fund collection slated

YOUNGSTOWN

The annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection will take place Nov. 21- 22 in the Diocese of Youngstown.

Now in its 28th year, the appeal is coordinated by the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) and offers support for senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests whose communities lack sufficient retirement funding. Some 33,000 women and men who are older than 70 will benefit.

The Diocese of Youngstown contributed $335,202 to the last collection. In 2015, the Antonine Sisters, Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration, Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Mark and the Ursuline Sisters received financial assistance made possible by the Retirement Fund for Religious. Women and men who serve or have served in the diocese but whose communities are based elsewhere may also benefit from the annual collection.

The 2014 appeal raised $28.3 million, and the NRRO distributed more than $25 million in financial support to 395 religious communities. Go to retiredreligious.org to learn more.
