Boardman hosts regional cross country meet

A couple Spartans will be running on familiar territory in Saturday’s cross country regional tournament at Boardman High School. Meanwhile, they’ll be joined by a number of other regional runners who all hope to earn a bid to the state meet at National Trail Raceway in Hebron on Nov. 7.

In Division I, Ethan Schwendeman and Casey Zaitzew will represent Boardman after both qualified at the district race at Trumbull County Fairgrounds last Saturday. Austintown Fitch also qualified as a team for DI as Matt Rozic placed fourth and Craig Schumaker fifth, while Canfield’s Chase Kern qualified as an individual as well.

Meanwhile. the Division II race features plenty of local faces.

Poland, Girard, Champion and South Range will all compete in boys team competition after strong outings in Saturday’s district tournament. There, Bulldogs runners Andrew Comstock and Charlie Dwyer placed first and second, while Girard’s Derek Basing and Michah Jones finished three-four.

West Branch’s Max Pigza, Michael Johnson and R.J. Yarwood will also compete in individual competition, as will Labrae’s John Walker.

For the DII girls, South Range, Lakeview, Poland and Girard are all racing as teams. Poland’s Maggie Sebest finished second in districts last Saturday, while South Range’s Xena Maali placed third. Also, Hailey Zelinsky of Niles qualified for individual competition at regionals.

In Division III boys, the Maplewood, McDonald and Badger teams will all try for state berths. At districts, Maplewood’s Allen Sparks and Tristan Dahman finished first and second, while Nate Keeney, Jake Hall and Ethan Sparks placed fifth, sixth and seventh. Meanwhile, McDonald’s Danny Loomis was third and Badger’s Owen Reecher fourth.

Mathews’ Kenny Wallace also qualified for Saturday’s individual competition, as did Mineral Ridge’s Palmer Cameron.

The girls will be well-represented locally in D-III as well.

The McDonald, Badger and Maplewood teams will compete in regionals, as Blue Devils runners Malina Mitchell, Heidi Hoffman, Ally Jamison and Alyssa Lynch finished 1-4 at districts. In individual competition, Mineral Ridge will be represented by Hannah-Abigail Toth, Jackson Milton by Michaelina Terranova and Lowellville by Maddie Warren.

For the entire day, the schedule looks like this: D-III girls race at 11 a.m., D-II girls at 11:45 a.m., D-I girls at 12:30 p.m., D-III boys at 1:30 p.m., D-II boys 2:15 p.m. and D-I boys 3 p.m.
