Sauce Cook-Off is planned for Sunday

Rotary Club of Youngstown and Grow Youngstown will co-sponsor the second annual Not Your Nonna’s Sauce Cook-off competition from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mount Carmel Ave.

Professional and amateur cooks will prepare sauces to be evaluated by guests and celebrity judges.

Professional cooks will compete in best nontraditional sauce division, and amateur categories will be red sauce, white sauce and green sauce. Prizes will be awarded.

Event beer and wine will be provided by Luva Bella’s Winery.

Cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children 9 and younger. Proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Youngstown and Grow Youngstown’s Farm to YOU market.

Benefit for Nicholas King set for Sunday

MERCER, PA.

A soup, supper and basket auction event to benefit Nicholas King will take place at noon Sunday at Mercer Area Junior-Senior High School, 545 W. Butler St.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

The meal includes soup, bread, drink and dessert.

There will be a basket auction, raffles, music and a live auction for a high-ticket item.

Ten year-old Nicholas, a fifth-grade student at Mercer Elementary School, was seriously injured during a parade on Oct. 14. He is recovering from surgery and was recently released from the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Proceeds from the Sunday event will help Nicholas and his family with ongoing medical bills related to the accident.

Night at the Races to benefit animal rescues

A Night at the Races sponsored by Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will take place Nov. 6 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and races begin at 7.

Cost is $10. Food, prizes, raffles and a 50-50 will be offered. Participants must be over 21 to enter. Proceeds will benefit the organizations rescue animals during difficult winter months.

Show set for Warren Family Mission

Youngstown’s Total Package Band will perform from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Nov. 7 in the lounge at Freeway Lanes, 2700 Parkman Road NW.

Guests to the performance must be over 21 to enter and are asked to take food donations for Warren Family Mission and donations for Toys for Tots and Warm Coats for Kids projects.

Cost is $5 at the door. There will also be a disc jockey, line dancing and free hot dogs.

Learn to make kolachi with Polish group

YOUNGSTOWN

Polish Youngstown will host a kolachi cooking class from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.

Participants will create the nut rolls by working yeast dough and preparing a filling. Guests should take an apron and a container to take home the treats; all other supplies will be provided.

Donations for Angel Tree Project needed

United Methodist Community Center, 2401 Belmont Ave., is seeking donations for its 2015 Angel Tree project.

Needed are gifts for children up to age 17; an Angel tag with sizes and other details will be provided.
