The Mahoning County Board of Elections’ new free app for smartphones provides a variety of voting information including directions to polling place, sample ballots and election results.

“We firmly believe that in order to meet our obligation to facilitate voting and promote democracy, we had to have an app,” board Director Joyce Kale-Pesta said Monday.

The app is the first of its kind in the state, she said. There was no cost involved with the app, she said.

To obtain the app, search “Mahoning County Votes” on Google Play or the Apple app store. Also, visit the new board of elections’ updated website – vote.mahoningcountyoh.gov – and scan the QR code.

“The rapid shift away from desktops and laptops to handheld means that more and more people are relying on apps rather than traditional websites to obtain information and services on the Internet,” Kale-Pesta said.

The app allows users to determine if they’re registered and if not, get a link to a downloadable registration form; view election-related dates and deadlines such as the last day to register, the dates of early voting, and the hours polls are open on Election Day; a link to a downloadable absentee ballot request form; a sample ballot; Google Map directions to polling locations; election results, how to apply to be a pollworker; and information about the proper identification needed to vote.

“We get asked so many basic questions that this app goes a long way toward answering those questions in an easy, modern way,” said Mark Munroe, board chairman.
