Deadline for GM contract approaches; Local 1112's Johnson hopeful

Staff report

LORDSTOWN

As a contract and strike deadline nears, workers are still waiting for word of an agreement between General Motors and the United Auto Workers union.

About 53,000 GM employees who are members of the UAW may go on strike if those involved cannot reach a tentative agreement for contract extension by 11:59 p.m. today.

A majority of the 4,500 employees at GM’s Lordstown plant are UAW members.

Glenn Johnson, president of Local 1112 of the union, told the Vindicator Sunday evening that negotiators are still at the table.

“They’re doing everything in their power to make an agreement happen,” Johnson said.

The UAW similarly threatened strike during negotiations with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles last week, but both parties came to an agreement before that happened.
