Canfield, Poland doubles teams are eliminated early

The Mahoning Valley’s high school tennis season came to an end Friday at the first day of the state tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
In Division I, Canfield’s doubles team of Ashley Kaleel and Hannah Cianciola won its first match, then was ousted in the second round.
In Division II, Poland sophomore Marissa Ricciardi and junior Audrey Schweers lost their first match by scores of 6-1, 6-2 to Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Caroline Andersen and Meredith Breda.
Kaleel, a senior, and Cianciola, a junior were making their third straight trip to state.
In Friday’s opener, Canfield, one of the top seeds, defeated Cincinnati Sycamore’s Maggie Skwara-Helen Sotropa by scores of 6-2, 6-3.
In the second round Powell Olentangy Liberty’s Anna Delaney and Alexis Steer defeated Canfield by scores of 6-4, 7-5.
Also advancing to today’s finals were teams from Cincinnati Ursuline Academy and two from Upper Arlington.
Indian Hill won its second match to advance to today’s finals in Division II. Also advancing were teams from Toledo Central Catholic, Hathaway Brown and Pepper Pike Orange.
