Family of slain Mich. teen files lawsuit against county, deputy

CHARLOTTE, Mich. (AP) — The family of an unarmed teenager fatally shot by an Eaton County sheriff's deputy after a traffic stop has sued the county and officer.

The Lansing State Journal reports the parents of 17-year-old Deven Guilford filed the federal lawsuit on Wednesday. Sgt. Jonathan Frost shot Guilford of Mulliken seven times Feb. 28 in Roxand Township.

Brian and Becky Guilford seek a jury trial but not specific monetary damages. The Guilfords say they "are outraged by the huge miscarriage of justice."

County officials declined comment. Prosecutors previously said Frost wouldn't be charged.

An internal investigation concluded he followed department regulations and training but recommended the department "re-emphasize" training.

Guilford was stopped for flashing his bright lights. They began to struggle when Frost tried to pull Guilford from his vehicle.
